Recording/Engineering
In addition to albums, Dave has recorded or engineered many other projects.
Ahl specializes in sophisticated on-site recording, such Neely Bruce's conceptual masterpiece Convergence in 2005. For this project, Ahl used a dozen microphones to capture four marching bands, two choruses, a giant drum, a church organ, and church bells as many of the participants marched around a football field (.mp3/.pdf). Afterwards, Ahl mixed and mastered the piece for the composer, which was later played on the radio.
Dave was hired by Wesleyan composers Taylor Ho Bynum and Tom Creen to record, engineer, and master a live avant-garde performance of their works performed by the renowned Flux Quartet in 2002.
Ahl has recorded demos, live material, singles, and albums for dozens of bands including Israeli songstress Tali Magory (.mp3), Gospel MC Knowledge (.mp3), Dancehall reggae artist Steve Biggz, acapella ensembles The Yale Whiffenpoofs and The Wesleyan Spirits, guitarist and songwriter Kit Hixon , Andrew Aprile, and many more. An Allmusic.com reviewer described Ahl's work on Vieux Farka Toure's debut album in very positive terms: "Engineered and mixed by Dave Ahl, Vieux Farka Touré is also a pristinely recorded work, crisp and direct, with everything up front and undiluted. As far as debut albums go, this one is nearly perfect."
Ahl is also experienced at live sound engineering: he's honed his skills at
the Knitting Factory in NYC and has worked with countless bands. Said MC Phesto of the live hip hop band Illegalize: "We have suffered terribly from bad sound at our shows. Our drummer hired Dave: he brought his mics and worked the board. Everything sounded great on stage and in the house. We were able to relax and put on a great show."
Film
Dave has worked in various capacities on a number of film projects. His compositions have appeared on everything from MTV, to CNN, to independent films.
Independent Films:
On Round Up Ready Nation, a documentary exploring the
consequences of genetically modified foods, Ahl composed the score, recorded some voiceovers, and restored and mixed the sound for the film. Watch some scenes from the movie here. In 2007, Ahl recorded five songs with the famous Yale Whiffenpoofs for a high-definition DVD production. See a clip of this video here.
For I Like Women, a musical comedy by Megan McCarron, Ahl edited, mixed and mastered five songs that appeared in the film. On Cornered, a tongue-in-cheek film about a laundry folding contest by Adam Freelander, Ahl treated voiceovers to make actors sound as though they were speaking in various locations.
With Modiba Productions:
With Ahl produced and remastered a video of Malian superstar
Oumou Sangare (.mov). Ahl mixed and produced a short documentary on ASAP: the Afrobeat Sudan Aid Project (.mov). One of the songs from that album, Star Wars (Modiba Darfur Remix), an Akoya track Ahl produced and remixed, is featured in an MTV-U PSA about the crisis in Darfur. Most recently, Ahl selected the soundtrack and mixed the sound for the trailer of Africa, New York (view the trailer).
Modiba Productions
Modiba is a production collective united in a love of African music, a passion for modern filmmaking, and a commitment to social and economic empowerment
across Africa. Modiba was founded in 2004 by Jesse Brenner and Eric Herman who, like Ahl, attended Wesleyan University. Herman and Brenner --who both studied abroad in Africa--had a shared vision: to produce and promote African music and film while raising money and awareness for African social and political causes. Brenner and Herman partnered with Ahl --making him music director, vice-president, and part-owner-- filmmaker Joe MF Wilson, and art director Adam Tuck, and Modiba became a reality. Partnering organizations that have worked with Modiba include Afropop Worldwide, True Majority, & MTV-U.
Modiba's first release -- ASAP: the Afrobeat Sudan Aid Project --represents the socially and politically minded work to which company is committed. This
compilation album, which hit #1 on the iTunes world music charts, features over 70 minutes of music contributed by African artists from Afrobeat founders Tony Allen and Fela Kuti to contemporary ensembles. Modiba gave all proceeds from the sale of ASAP - $120,000 US to date--to Kebkabiyah Smallholders Charitable Society, an Oxfam-sponsored organization that does relief work in Darfur. More than a fundraiser, ASAP is about raising awareness about an African cause through music, text, and video collaborations with African artists.
