Selfish is a unique hip hop album Dave Ahl produced for the Washington State trio, the Educataz. This project was the result of a two-month collaboration with the group, who drove across country in a RV to work with Ahl. The Educataz provided the lyrics and the turntable skills; Ahl created original backing tracks that the group rapped and scratched over. The entire album was produced in Ahl's college dorm room with minimal equipment.
Selfish draws on mixed influences from hip-hop and jazz to create a live band hip-hop sound that is part grit, part soul. The Educataz draw influences from Organized Konfusion, De La, J5, and have performed with Aceyalone, Souls of Mischief, Typical Cats, Project Blowed, The Chicharones, and The Wilson Project.
