We are so excited to announce the release of Bombino's new album, Nomad. At the invitation of The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, Bombino and his band traveled from Niger to Nashville for the recording, helmed by Auerbach at his studio, Easy Eye Sound. Take a peak at the teaser video below for a look inside the studio during the session -- you'll see it was an incredible atmosphere that, according to Uncut, created "a heavy-duty recalibration of desert blues."

In the meantime, take another listen to 'Agadez' right over HERE. Of 'Agadez,' NPR said "The songs ... combine the best traits of Saturday nights and Sunday mornings, mixing killer solos with delicate repetition. The most magical moments come when Bombino finishes a verse—all sung in the Tuareg language of Tamasheq—and begins to lose himself in his guitar. You can’t help but follow him down."
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars and World Food Program USA release the official 'Big Fat Dog' video
On the release of the new video for 'Big Fat Dog,' Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars joined forces with The World Food Program USA to bring attention to the urgent issue of global hunger. The partnership begins with the public release of the new music video that playfully addresses the divide between the haves and have-nots. And while the song is an uptempo reggae tune, there is an honest and universal story in the lyrics.

Bombino performs for Pitchfork.TV
Before embarking on his third tour of North America since the explosive release of his debut album Agadez last spring, Bombino and his band strolled into Highline Park in New York City with the Pitchfork.TV crew. With spring in the air, people gathered around as Bombino and his band performed a brand new acoustic song dedicated to the Toureg, the nomadic tribe of the Sahara desert from which they are from. Watch the band perform Imouhar.

The Toure-Raichel Collective Collects Rave Reviews from NPR, Wall Street Journal and more
"The deeply affecting, at times hypnotic album rises from simmering grooves enriched by Mr. Touré's stinging solos on acoustic and electric guitars and Mr. Raichel's cascading piano. It's not so much a cross-cultural exercise as an exploration of common ground." --The Wall Street Journal
"These players delve into the swirling waters of our globalized music culture and pull out bright fish, almost perfect, as if designed instead of conjured in the heat of improvisation."--NPR's All Things Considered
"The chance meeting of Vieux Farka Toure and Idan Raichel in an airport, and the relaxed musical courtship that followed, might just be the world music success story of the decade."--About.com
"Simply divine...we are beside ourselves here."--Giant Step

Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars release "Radio Salone" to rave reviews
The globally acclaimed Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars return with their third studio album, Radio Salone, out now on CD and limited-edition 2LP vinyl via Cumbancha. Produced by roots reggae, soul and Afrobeat guru Victor Axelrod, aka Ticklah, and recorded in Brooklyn’s Dunham Studios, Radio Salone marks the band’s most musically sophisticated collection of songs to date.
Introducing: The Toure-Raichel Collective
Vieux Farka Touré (Mali) and Idan Raichel (Israel), virtuosic superstars from very different backgrounds, join together to create masterworks of collaboration and improvisation. After a chance meeting in an airport in Europe, Idan and Vieux forged a deep friendship that led to an impromptu get together at a small studio in Tel Aviv in November 2010. The resulting recording session – acoustic, spontaneous, entirely improvised, and stunningly beautiful – could only be described as magic, and The Touré-Raichel Collective was born. On the upcoming album The Tel Aviv Session, to be released by Cumbancha, Idan and Vieux have captured an inspired musical moment that will bring to mind classic albums such as Talking Timbuktu by Ali Farka Touré with Ry Cooder, Keith Jarrett’s The Köln Concert or Vincent Segal and Ballake Sissoko’s acclaimed Chamber Music . The live concert reflects the natural spontaneity and free-form creativity of the recording sessions, allowing audiences to experience firsthand the invention of sublime and transcendent music that crosses boundaries of country, culture and tradition.
Click here for The Touré-Raichel Collective’s website and North American tour dates. The Tel Aviv Session will be available internationally on March 27, 2012.
Modiba music-supervised film "In Tahrir Square" on Oscar shortlist
Jon Alpert and Matthew O’Neill’s In Tahrir Square is among the eight shortlisted contenders for the 84th Academy Awards’ Best Documentary Short Subject category, of which three to five films will earn Oscar nominations. The eight docs, named by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, were chosen from all eligible entries. Modiba provided the Egyptian-set film with music selections and clearances. It was truly an honor to work on this important film!
Vieux Farka Toure premieres new video for "All the Same feat. Dave Matthews"
With "All the Same," Vieux Farka Toure and Dave Matthews craft a stunning song about the perils of possessing a unique and desirable gift. Both Vieux and Dave are hailed as musical torch-bearers of both their generation and hometown, but with this venerable duty comes the threat of targeted jealousy. "Smiles and promises/Cry real tears 'til you believe/They don't want you, they want what you've got/It may taste sweet but love it's not." In an equally stunning video by Native Resonance, a young boy finds himself thrust into limelight and power in a dreamlike world surrounded by entranced peers. The children dance around their newly crowned king who is momentarily blissful sitting on his throne. But adoration quickly turns to jealousy as the same child who crowned the king is the one to topple his kingdom in an attempt to steal the throne for himself. It is in the wisdom of a little girl singing Dave Matthews' lines that the truth is revealed.
Rolling Stone says ''The Secret' slays!'
We are thrilled to announce Vieux Farka Toure’s third and
most accomplished studio album, The Secret (Six
Degrees Records, May 2011) is OUT NOW! The album produced by guitarist Eric
Krasno (of Soulive fame) also features Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks, John
Scofield, Ivan Neville and Vieux’s final collaboration with his legendary
father, Ali Farka Toure.
“To make this album I had to dig deep into the secrets of my own history and my country’s culture in order to move the music forward,”
Vieux said, back in his native Mali. “My music is more mature now, more evolved. It digs deeper into the past and pushes harder into the
future as a result. This is a hard thing to explain, but hopefully the music speaks for itself. Do you want to know the secret? You have to
listen to the album.”
And it appears Rolling Stone did listen and loved what they heard. Will
Hermes from Rolling Stone says Vieux “joins American peers for a crossover
set that slays, primarily because the players come to his music, not the
other way around.” With a star-rating on par with the uber-popular Lonely
Island and Tyler, The Creator releases, Vieux’s album is receiving a warm
welcome from the music industry mainstream. Read the entire stellar review
HERE.
Note: Grammy-nominated guitarist John Scofield played with Miles Davis,
not Mahavishnu Orchestra.
