BUY the FIGHT MALARIA tee-shirt at the Modiba Store and help save lives

As part of its ongoing commitment to bringing together critical African causes with new Afrocentric music, Modiba is very proud to announce the launch of its FIGHT MALARIA campaign.

10% of proceeds from Modiba’s Vieux Farka Toure album and 25% of proceeds from our FIGHT MALARIA tee-shirt is benefiting malaria relief in Mali by Bée Sago. Bée Sago is a UNICEF-affiliated organization involved in the import and distribution of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) in Mali. They have partnered with UNICEF, Roll Back Malaria, World Bank, OMS, USAID, and others to achieve their goal of protecting Malians, especially children, from contracting malaria.

Malaria currently threatens over 40% of the world’s population, kills over 3000 children a day, and costs Africa alone more than $12 billion a year.

While Mali is only one of dozens of African countries lying within the high-risk malaria zones of tropical Africa, it is also one of the poorest among these countries. In fact, with a $900 annual GDP per capita, Mali ranks among the twenty poorest countries in the world, and was ranked 171st out of 175 countries listed in the United Nations’ Development Programme’s 2003 Human Development Index. Even though Mali boasts an incredibly low HIV/AIDS rate for an African country (under five percent), it also has an infant mortality rate of almost 150 out of every 1000 children born (Source: CIA World Factbook), of which at least 20% are due directly to malarial infection (Source: UNDP).

Nevertheless, there is hope. And it’s within closer reach than one might think. The free distribution of chemically-treated mosquito nets to mothers in some parts of rural Mali by UNICEF has led to a reduction in malaria-related deaths by as much as two-thirds.And Modiba, with your help, is aiming to continue this process through our FIGHT MALARIA campaign.
